Plenty of people have seen the YouTube video of the couple who updated their relationship status on Facebook at the altar. And then there's the Icelandic comedy sketch of the couple who breaks up on Facebook.
I want to share with you a true story that I heard from a colleague of mine.
My colleague was on Facebook. As she read her status messages, she noticed that her "significant other" had just updated his Facebook account to indicate that he was now "married". His status message surprised her because she knew that they were not legally married and had no plans to change that situation. They had been together for a number of years, but the relationship was not "official".
At the end of the week, they went out afor a happy hour with friends. In the course of the conversation, the subject of Facebook came up. She felt that this was the perfect opportunity to bring up the change in her significant other's Facebook status.
And so she said to her partner, " I noticed that you have updated your Facebook status to indicate that you are married. I hope you will be very happy together."
Her partner laughed and said, " I have always felt that we are married (legally or not) - and that is what I wanted to communicate to my Facebook friends and the rest of the world. So I have chosen to indicate that I am married on Facebook. It does not bother me in the least that you do not even indicate that we are in a relationship."
They both laughed and toasted each other. Each has chosen to respect the relationship in a way with which they are comfortable
So while we hear many stories of people breaking up or divorcing on Facebook, there are actually stories of people cementing their relationship through Facebook.

The strange thing about Facebook is that he could be “married” and she could be “in a relationship” but – as far as I know – they couldn’t be “married to [her]” and “in a relationship with [him]“. Another weird thing about Facebook relationships… I had mine set to “single” then decided to remove the relationship status altogether, and didn’t realize (until people started to comment on it) that Facebook had announced “Sarah is no longer single”.
