Today I'm going to be Mac-centric on Tuesday Tech Tools, only because this tool is not currently available for other operating systems (one can always hope). However, it is Open Source?- and I'm a big fan of that!
This one is another lifesaver, for road warriors as well as anyone who takes their Mac laptop to the local coffee place.?IAlertU?is a software that runs on your Mac and uses the built-in motion sensor and iSight camera.??It's intended to work with a Mac remote, but there are other options.
When activated,?IAlertU?triggers an alarm. You can choose various triggers: laptop movement, touching the keyboard / trackpad / mouse, removing the AC adaptor or an attached device. You also have some choices of alarm settings.
Best of all, it can also be set to automatically take a snapshot of the perpetrator with the iSight camera and send it automatically by email to your personal email account. Talk about Candid Camera...
Check out the?IAlertU demonstration video?on YouTube.
I have to admit that I get a kick out of pointing the Mac remote at my laptop and hearing it chirp like a car alarm.
Cost: US$0 - That's right, it's?FREE!

There was no proper place to put this comment, but I just wanted to say that I love that random quote you use from RL Stephenson, to the effect of, “There are no foreign lands, only foreign travelers.” It seems appropriate to the dialogue you and I have been conducting.
Hi, really, I found iAlertU – very easy to use and can be activated just by using the Apple Remote. Now, I can access all it’s settings directly from the menu bar and choose what sort of alarm to trigger. The think which I see is- iAlertU is activated and deactivated using the infrared remote control included with every Apple MacBook computer.
iAlertU also features functionality which utilizes the built in iSight camera to photograph the would be thief and then email the photo to a user specified email address. Is’nt it great ?
