I'm in the final stages of planning for an upcoming trip abroad, which is always exciting. This time I need to make sure that I've got compact yet ample storage and backup for the projects I'll be doing on my MacBook laptop. (It's work, after all, not a vacation!)
I found everything I needed -- and more -- in the OWC Mercury On-The-Go Portable Firewire drive.?I've been buying from OWC for a few years and have been pleased with their products and their customer service.
Among some of the drive's key features:
- Compact 3.5"(w) x 5.5"(d) x 1"(h) size
- Fully Suitable for Audio/Video Applications
- Bus Powered or may be powered with AC adapter**
- Super Quiet Operation
- Shock Isolation System
- Weight of less than 11 Ounces
But that's not all. The OWC On-The-Go offers not only a variety of drive capacity sizes (currently from 40-500GB), but also offers choices of connections from plain USB 2.0 to a dual 400/800 Firewire. In one fell swoop and at a reasonable price, I've now tripled the storage space of my MacBook.
The drive can be formatted for Mac or Win OS. I was able to format it so that I've now got a copy of my MacOS install CD, plus a bootable copy of the OS and plenty of room left for storage. The folks at OWC suggested doing this so that I can use the drive to boot up my Macbook if I had a (gasp!) hard disk failure. In fact, they told me that the drive is essentially the same size as the one in my Macbook and could be used as a replacement, if needed.
I'm delighted with the On-The-Go drive and look forward to using it to give me that extra security with my projects.?
Any portable Firewire drives that you recommend?
